The Scale of Communication Matches the Scale of Challenges

A collective voice for the Earth is the most sensible and straightforward requirement for choosing a pathway ahead that prevents climate catastrophe and ruin of the biosphere. Because many of the critical challenges we face are global, it is vital that the scale of human communication match the planetary scale of these challenges. As Einstein famously said, problems cannot be solved at the same level at which they were created. We have to go to a higher level and see things in a big picture perspective to discover realistic solutions. For example, with climate change, if we accept Einstein’s insight, we must look for understanding at a level above the nations, corporations, and media that have created the climate crisis. Because Earth Voice functions at a global level, it will naturally engage both challenges and opportunities from a larger, whole-systems perspective. Earth Voice is a vehicle for collective discovery and action. 

An Earth Voice Movement Changes Humanity's Future

These are times of momentous choice for the future of humanity and the Earth. Many factors will be vital in making the turn to a sustainable and meaningful future, but none is more essential than finding our collective voice to enable we humans to pull together instead of pull apart. The simple idea that the people of the Earth can now have a collective voice changes our future! No longer is the future left almost entirely to the mercy of competing interests of nations and corporations. By awakening our capacity for collective communication, we can work together to create a more promising future.

What kind of communication is required to give the citizens of the world an authentic collective voice? Critically important, it must be nearly simultaneous, fair, representative, and global in scope. This level of functioning of a “global nervous system” would have been completely unthinkable prior to the emergence the internet. Now this is a potential increasingly taken for granted.

As envisioned here, Earth Voice is not an advocacy organization but rather a trans-partisan discovery organization with two, primary jobs

1) Discover which concerns are most important to the people of the Earth

2) discover humanity’s views regarding these critical concerns

How Earth Voice Can Work

Imagine a simple mobile-phone app is available in many languages that enables people around the world to vote their views on two, global issues. Beyond a simple, “yes/no” vote, we will offer a more differentiated vote with a spectrum of five possible responses, from strongly agree to strongly disagree.

Importantly, this is a democratic process and is strictly confidential. Your email address will be private and will not be shared for either commercial or promotional purposes. In the future, we will be inviting responses to a range of topics of broad public concern ranging from climate change to species extinction, resource depletion, sustainable energy, and many more. However, before opening this up for voting, we will do considerable trans-partisan organizing in regions around the Earth to make the survey known widely. Therefore, this is only intended to be illustrative of the feedback process.

The first vote is for an ongoing Earth Voice process and is a powerful affirmation of our collective identity as global citizens. The second vote transcends nation-state politics and expresses our collective empowerment as a community of citizens. The results of the Earth Voice voting will be highly public and sent to key decision-makers around the world, inviting their response to the views of a global citizenry. Importantly, the most important outcome from the Earth Voice process may not be to influence particular policies but rather to awaken the people of the Earth to the stunning reality that we now can have a collective voice in choosing our future!

The Trans-Partisan Role  Earth Voice

To mobilize the people of the Earth in mature dialogue, it is vital to establish the legitimacy of Earth Voice process and votes. In turn, it will be vital for the Earth Voice process to follow a few, key principles; for example:

• No advocacy by the Earth Voice organization; it is strictly trans-partisan and impartial
• No attachment to outcome by the Earth Voice organization
• One person, one vote — a continuously improving process of accurate representation
• Trans-partisanship and fair presentation of alternative views by the Earth Voice organization

With careful preparation, diverse representation, and enthusiastic support, Earth Voice® could go viral around the world. With dignity, maturity, and deep regard for humanity’s future, Earth Voice could launch with two, simple votes. A viral, social media movement could spread like wildfire. Using the internet and electronics, the global tally could be visible in real-time — visualize an electronic image of an “Earth Voice Rising” thermometer, showing the number of people voting for an ongoing Earth Voice for humanity.  Could support for Earth Voice reach a billion votes? More? Could we begin to feel a transcending solidarity as a human community?

Just because we have the technological tools to communicate with ourselves as a species does not mean we will automatically do so. The question remains whether we have the collective maturity to consciously seize this precious opportunity. If we do, the next great superpower will not be a nation, corporation, or media empire; rather, it will be the billions of ordinary citizens who encircle the Earth and who are increasingly calling, with one voice, for unprecedented cooperation, reconciliation and creative action to build a sustainable and meaningful future.
